Poiema
Our Mission

Poiema is called to

  • Uphold each individual in the love of Christ so that they may become whole.
  • Be honest and vulnerable in this task.
  • Encourage living into hope in advocacy, non-violence, inclusivity and compassion.
  • Partner with others to transform the fabric of our culture.

What Is Poiema?

  • Poiema is a Greek word used in the New Testament for handiwork or work of art. It says that we are God’s creation. (Ephesians 2:10) Each person is a beautiful gift. Everyone is welcome and their gifts are encouraged.
  • Poiema is an intentional community committed to honoring God through stewardship of shared land and support of each other’s diverse spiritual explorations and inspirations and missions.
  • Poiema is a small group of folks led by the example of the life and teachings of Jesus Christ and affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA).
  • Poiema works toward

    • a greater awareness of the contrast between Christ’s non-violent expressions of love and our culture.
    • empowering each other to live in this comprehensive love of Christ.
    • conserving stewardship of the land on which we live and all creation.
    • a growing receptivity and openness to each other and our neighbors, stretching us all in our compassion, faith, and action.
    • learning lessons from the Christian faith and other faiths in new ways.
    • continuing our connection to the Presbyterian denomination with gratitude for its openness.

    Poiema offers

    • hospitality through participatory worship in a straw-bale cottage among the oaks and red cedars in east rural Travis County between Manor and Webberville.
    • a rustic, natural setting for contemplation and for group or individual retreat.
    • a place to share yourself and your gifts.
    • an open invitation to join with us in this challenge and adventure as we learn Christ-lessons.
